I want to plant a tomato plant on my patio in a 5 gallon plastic bucket. Should I drill holes in the bottom, or about 2 inches up the side? What should I use in the bottom of the bucket for drainage?

(This isn't a homework question, I just want to see if there are any truly intelligent people out there.)
You have two buckets. One bucket measures 3 gallons, the other 5. You also have an unlimited supply of water to fill the buckets with.
How do you accurately measure 4 gallons of into the 5 gallon bucket using only te supplies listed? Both buckets are oddly shaped so that it is impossible to 'guesstimate' 4 gallons.
Rest assured, there is a correct answer. A similar problem is also featured in a movie. Can anybody tell me which movie this is from? If you remember the solution, don't give it away. I want to see if there is anybody here that can actually figure it out.
Ok... ok...
I'm seeing several people with identical answers. Is this copy+pasted? From where?
